Can you do any cool tricks?

- anonymous

I am not sure if it is cool, but I can whistle and hum at the same time. My younger students are always impressed when I do it. Then want me to teach them how to do it. I always tell them, "Just start whistling and then hum." I guess it is not as easy as that though, becuase they can't do it.

Are you excited about Valentine's day?

- Tomo

Yes! ....and no. Valentine's Day feels really strange to me in Japan. I get chocolate from people and then I have to wait a whole month to give chocolate and say thanks.

In America, there is only Valentine's Day. There is no White Day. Men and women give chocolate, flowers, candy, poems, and cards on the same day.

Did you do Setubun?

- anonymous

Yes, I did. I dressed-up as a monster and chased my kids around the house, while they threw soybeans at me.

I also taught them how to say the Japanese phrase in English.
"Out with evil. In with fortune."

Then, we ate our age in soybeans and one more for good luck this year.

Is international marriage hard for you?

- R

I think international marriage is the same as any other marriage; it is all about communication. So the hardest part about international marriage is the language barrier. If you can't understand each other, it makes expressing your feeling very difficult. Therefor, the best thing you could do in that situation is to make sure you both learn eachother's language well.

All-in-all, my international marriage is hard, but not any harder than any other marriage. It is a lot of fun too!

What do you think about social media?

- Poli

Personally, I have tried, Mixi, Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Line.

Social media can be really fun if used correctly. You can make new friends, play games, share important things in your life, and see what your friends are up to.

However, if you are not careful, bad things can happen. Making dangerous friends, stalkers, scammers trying to get your money, and so much more.

I think twitter is one of the most dangerous. It is very open and people post so easily about everything they are doing.

Check your privacy settings and be careful.

What's the difference between "Let's start!" and "Let's get started!" ?

- T-Bird

"Let's get started" and "Let's start" have the same meaning. In my opinion saying "Let's get started" sounds a bit more formal, but it really isn't.

The usage in a sentence is different though.
"Let's get started" needs a preposition after it before using a gerund:
Let's get started on doing our homework.

Where as "Let's start" doesn't need a preposition:
Let's start doing our homework.

Can you play an instrument?

- Cat

Yes. When I was in preschool, I learned the piano. I couldn't sit still, so the teacher asked me to quit. When I got to middle school, I played the trumpet in band.

At my school you had to choose an instrument or sing. I hated singing in front of people, so I chose an instrument that I thought was cool. I am glad I learned it, but at the time I hated how much we had to do. I had to play in concerts, pep band, community band, and sometimes marching band. I was never really good though.

I haven't played in a long time.

Can you teach me how to use the Inversion? For example, quoted from soccer news, "Prolific COSTA(*forward) repaying Chelsea faith,SAYS MOURINHO". "SAYS MOURINHO" parts mean the Inversion?

- T-Bird

Inversion is when you put the verb before the subject. In a normal sentence you would say, "Mourinho says ~." (Subject Verb) In the soccer news and many books will put the quote first and then the inversion "~ says Mourinho." (Verb Subject)

When to use inversion is like a lot of things in English...you just have to memorize when to use it. Inversion is mainly used in written English. So it is good to know if you like to read and write.

Here is a site with some usages that you should memorize: Inversion Rules. I chose this site because it is a simple list and not too much explaining.

- Cheese cake

Lightning is the light that you see. So it is called "light"ning. Thunder is what you hear.

After you see the lightning start counting seconds. When you hear the thunder you can figure-out how far away the lightning strike was.
10 seconds equals 3 kilometers.
5 seconds would be half of that, 1.5 kilometers.

- anonymous

I have never liked real guns. I always loved playing with toy guns as a kid and paintball guns when I got older. I have been to a shooting range a couple of times and it was a ton of fun. That was with real guns. However, I don't think people need them in their homes for defense. Crazy people aren't always crazy. Please imagine that there is a student who study English, but he has no motivation to study English. How do you motivate him?

- T-Bird

First, I would ask him what his hobbies are. Then I would find ways for him to study English using his hobbies. If he likes games, then he can buy import games from America and play them in English. If he likes music, have him find the lyrics for the songs he likes and learn them. If he likes art, then buy some English art magazines and books and read about his favorite artists and techniques in English. Almost any hobby can be done in English.

Intransitive Verb or Transitive Verb, is it nerve-racking, isn't it?

- T-Bird

It can be quite confusing, but not so bad once you know the rules.
Transitive verbs always require an object after them. "I ate dinner."

Intransitive verbs don't have objects after them. "I cried." "I walked to the park." Prepositions are not objects, so "walked" is intransitive.

Some verbs can be used in both forms.
Transitive: "I played a game."
Intransitive: "I played with friends."

Get away from the computer for a while. Close your eyes and just listen to the sounds of the room for 5 minutes. It is very relaxing and refreshing.

I want to change jobs. What should I be?

- Neko
